Nile Wetlands Ecosystems Wise-Use for Sustainable Development

The course is a product under the Regional Project: Nile Water E-Learning Hub for Training and Education Tools for Capacity Development, funded by DUPC2 programme-IHE-Delft. This course intends to focus on both the evaluation and valuation of wetlands with specific focus on the Nile basin region which includes diverse and vast wetlands ecosystems. The course will take the student from understanding the services and benefits of wetlands ecosystems, their evaluation and assessment to the application of economic valuation as a powerful tool to aid and improve wise use and management of wetlands resources for sustainability and better livelihood. This will be achieved by providing the needed knowledge and analytical tools for measuring and comparing the various benefits of wetlands, with real applications on wetlands case studies from the Nile basin and with considering the impact of the socio-economic and gender aspects in the valuation process.

Course General Objectives

After completing this course Participants will be able to:

  • Illustrate and explain the wetlands ecosystems services with a focus on the Nile basin.
  • Demonstrate the different methods for wetlands ecosystems assessment.
  • Map and analyze wetlands ecosystems using different tools such as EO tools to distinguish the different services of wetlands ecosystems.
  • Demonstrate the economic valuation tools and methods of ecosystems services valuation.
  • Relate the important role of gender groups to wetlands services valuation and decision making for wise use.
  • Test the selected valuation tools on case studies from the Nile basin
  • Integrate the value of water and ecosystems valuation approach into decision-making.

Duration

This short course is designed to be a full online course. It will be for a total duration of 6 weeks with a certificate of attendance and completion. The course will start on 7th February 2022 and ends on 21st March 2022.

Course Content and Structure

Module 1: Wetlands Ecosystems Characteristics and Services in the Nile Basin

Module2: Wetlands Ecosystems degradation and the need for assessment methods and tools,

Module3: Mainstreaming economic valuation into decision making and Introduction to Economic Valuation concepts and Methods

Module4: Gender issues and actions on economic valuation and development of wetlands ecosystems

Module5:  Data Collection and Management in wetlands economic valuation: case studies from the Nile Basin

Target Group

The course targets participants from the Nile basin countries with basic experience and background on wetlands and ecosystems management, participants from other regions of the world are also encouraged to join this course for knowledge exchange. A background in economics or socio-economics will be an added value. In this context, participants are expected to come from multidisciplinary backgrounds with a common focus on wetlands and ecosystems management. NBCBN network members and partners from other networks, who are working in the field of research or management of wetlands, are welcomed to join this course.
